Kej brushes Holly off, telling her it’s nothing but she has to get back to the train station - she’s made up her mind that she can’t help and needs to get back to the big city. Crestfallen, they walk in silence back to the car and Holly starts the engine.
Kej sips on the insanely delicious hot chocolate as Holly drives, and makes a comment about how good it is. They look out the window at a beautiful Christmas display while stopped at the one red light in town. Kej comments on how beautiful it is.
Suddenly Holly is furious, and tells Kej it will all be gone this time next year because when the factory closes, the town will lose all of it’s Christmas Spirit. Kej tells her it’s unfair to put all that responsibility on her to which Holly agrees but tells Kej she’s their last hope.
To her surprise, Kej tears up. She can’t hold it in anymore. She tells Holly everything - the crush, the conflict of saving the town or saving her job.
Holly listens without saying a word, then the two sit in silence for a long time, nothing but the sips of hot chocolate and the sound of Christmas music (coming from where? who knows - it’s always mysteriously in the air in this town). Finally she speaks.
Holly tells her that if Christmas isn’t the time of year to discover the truth inside your heart, then when is? She reminds Kej that the massive tree-lighting ceremony is later that night and it always gets everyone in the Christmas Spirit. Surely if she attends the tree-lighting, her heart will tell her what to do? And if it isn’t meant to be, Holly promises to take Kej back to the train station first thing in the morning.
Kej nervously agrees and they spend the rest of the afternoon sipping hot chocolate and driving around looking at different houses’ Christmas decorations - all of them somehow incorporating red envelopes.
When the time comes, Holly turns back towards Main Street to find a parking spot and they both get out of the car. A crowd is already gathering, and in the distance they can both see Chaz staring in wonder up at the tree.
Kej turns to Holly…
Kej tells Holly she can’t do this, she’s too afraid, and bolts into the crowd to escape!
