Kej’s parents welcome the realtor - Chad - in and begin showing him around from room to room. She follows behind, making snippy comments and undercutting the things they show him about the house that make it so special. He tries to keep the peace, smiling and taking photos.
When they reach the kitchen Kej’s parents realize they’re out of wine (I know right - like, this place definitely has a wine cellar??) and leave the two of them alone.
Chad does his best to be kind, asking Kej questions about herself. She tells him a bit about her world in the big city and he tells her he could never do that - he’s a small town guy through and through. Their banter turns from tense foes to playful flirting. He teases her about wanted to live, or at least enjoy, her parents’ home forever. She teases him that he’ll never be able to afford something like this on a realtor salary (not cool Kej) but it doesn’t phase him. He tells her that the size or price of the place doesn’t matter, it only matters if it feels like home, and a place feels like home when it’s filled with love.
They begin to lean in for a kiss when they’re interrupted by Kej’s parents returning with several bottoms of wine. Startled, Kej reverts to her salty demeanor and more or less kicks Chad out of the house. Her parents watch in embarrassed horror. Feeling conflicted and torn, Kej retreats to her favorite room in the house for solace and reflection…
The upstairs parlor with the big picture window, it always felt so beautiful.
The front drawing room with the big picture window, it always felt so cozy.
